Contains Lawrie Tatum's diary, written while he was Kiowa Indian Agent at Fort Sill, Indian Territory, 1869-1871. Includes photocopies of Tatum family correspondence, chiefly letters sent to and from Lawrie and his wife Mary Ann Dean Tatum. Also contains copies of biography of Lawrie Tatum; accounts of the founding of the Friends Meeting and a school in Springdale, Iowa; account books from the Kiowa Agency; report of his guardianship of Mary Hoover; and other Tatum papers.

Herbert Clark Hoover (b. August 10, 1874, Iowa-d. October 20, 1964), thirty-first president of the United States, was born in Iowa, and was orphaned as a child. Lawrie Tatum was born in 1822 and came to Cedar County, Iowa in 1844. He married Mary Ann Dean in 1848 and had four sons and a daughter. Tatum helped to found the Springdale Quaker meeting and was known as a friend to runaway slaves travelling on the Underground railroad. He served as Indian Agent for the Kiowa tribe in Fort Sill, Indian Territory and wrote the book "Our Red Brothers."
